Facebook is secretly co-operating with a team of engineers with strong expertise related to design and manufacture of chip processors. This social networking giant has recently found its talents for the position of Vice President and Chief Research Officer. According to some reliable internal sources, this team would be working with Andrew Bosworth, Head of the company’s Virtual Reality (VR) Division and Augmented Reality (AR).

According to a job listing on Facebook Inc.’s corporate website, the social media company is looking for a manager to set up an “end-to-end SoC/ASIC, firmware and drive development organization”. While, both Google and Facebook spokesmen declined to reveal any information.

The world’s largest social networking empire had set up a microprocessor research group earlier this year, according to a Bloomberg News report in April 2018. It was known that the company wanted to do research on semiconductor chips for later use. It could be employed for a variety of purposes, including the processing of information for huge data centers and tasks basing on artificial intelligence.

Google had reported to develop microprocessors that would run its own devices in the near future. This search engine giant is expected to continue to remarkably change the technology field as it did in the past two years with flagship Pixel 3.

Facebook and Google, along with Apple, are good examples of how technology companies jump to research and find some ways to provide their semiconductor chips for themselves with an aim to minimizing the dependence on big chip manufacturers like Intel or Qualcomm. Apple has equipped its iPad and iPhone with self-designed chips since 2010, along with a variety of custom chips for various functions such as Bluetooth connectivity, photography, and machine learning. Apple had set a target to release its Macbook and iMac with customized chips.

Facebook is also attempting to release new hardware devices as soon as possible. They are likely to deploy VR and AR because this company has formed Oculus and Building 8 specialized research teams. Earlier this year, the company introduced VR Oculus Go glasses running on Qualcomm’s internal processing chips. Facebook is also researching the production of smart speakers with a larger touch screen for video chat. In the future, with its own custom-designed processor, Facebook will have greater control over product development and better hardware as well as software optimizations.

Custom chips can also boost Facebook’s power on the artificial intelligence field. This giant is addressed to be implementing AI to help administrators understand the contents posted by users. It helps quickly remove inappropriate posts, fake account warnings, and violent live stream videos. However, until then, real-world moderators will still have to continue fighting manually in the darkest corners of the planet’s most popular social network.
